ANTIQUITES TROYENNES, 1874.
by Dr. Heinrich Schliemann.
Portfolio of photographs and book by the archeologist Dr. Heinrich Schliemann entitled Antiquités Troyennes. The single volume has been translated from German into French by Alexander Rizos Rangabé and was published by Maisonneuve et Cie, in 1874, the same year the German edition was published in Leipzig by F.A. Brockhaus. In this book is a minutely detailed description of the accounts of Dr. Schliemann's efforts to uncover the ancient city of Troy. It is a half–leather hardbound volume (9 1/4" x 6") with 380 pages of text.
The portfolio of photographs that accompanies the book is a complimentary part of the record of Dr. Schliemann's project. The photographs illustrate many of the objects found such as terra-cotta vases, arms and instruments, kitchen utensils, knives made of stone or copper, marble idols, tools, and granite balls. There are several photographic illustrations of site locations, drawings of sites and images of the treasure of Priam: gold necklaces and bracelets. The portfolio, entitled Atlas des Antiquités Troyennes, illustrations photographiques, is complete with its 217 plates of albumen photographs mounted on original paperboards, and captioned in the images in German. Accompanying the plates is a 58 page softbound folder, in French, describing the objects in each plate.
